Nicolas Studer

PhD student

Nicolas Studer grew up in a small mountain village in Wallis. He studied Biology at the ETH Zürich, where he chose to specialize in the field of Microbiology and Immunology. For his Master thesis entitled “SPI-1 gene expression and its implications in the membrane stress response in Salmonella Typhimurium” he joined the lab of Prof. Wolf-Dietrich Hardt. In the Hapfelmeier lab he is working on the intestinal pathogen Clostridium difficile. He is mainly interested in the germination of spores in the intestine and the role of the microbiota in this process. His project is a joint venture with labs at the EPFL Lausanne (CH) and the University of Nottingham (UK).

When Nico is not working in the lab, he is a passionate percussionist. Besides being a member of the local wind band of his hometown, he plays in various project orchestras and formations. Apart from science and music, he enjoys reading, travelling and the occasional cultural evening at concerts, theaters or the opera.”
